We all were good boys We had been told that the Second World War bombs had destroyed our land of poets, seafarers and cooks We attended primary school singing Mameli's Hymn. Today they sneer at these old values that are trodden upon by stupid drunkards. As young men, we met in Palermo Square hour hearts beating with so much emotion, but we had a clear goal in mind: to get a diploma and a good job. We felt the sea in our bones, touring the world and getting to know it! We felt like kings on our coaches! As happy as on a rollercoaster. How many dreams under that mast and yards! How much fear in front of our teachers! But even after the most difficult tests, we did appreciated them and still do now. Remembering everything and everybody of those beautiful years would eclipse De Amicis's ”Cuore”. But something has no doubt filled our souls because we are still friends today. Dear mast! We met at your foot, We climbed the ladders to get higher and higher; to feel young again we shouted “ZUMBAI” to the world with all our hearts. But now let's think about our grandchildren. Now they no longer climb the stairs of our glorious school, and they'll work on much more modern ships, but they should not forget LA CARRETTA and NAUTICO new premises. They shouldn't believe in barkers and charlatans! They won't forget the five years spent in the school! And even if they'll become great masters, they should not forget that everything ends. Only the memories of a life at sea do remain. Free translation |
